In late 2003, Vinayak Lohani, an IIT graduate on the brink of an illustrious career at IIM, made a startling career change: he decided to give up the glittering road ahead to start Parivaar, a home for children from the streets of Calcutta. The organization particularly aims to rehabilitate ‘familyless’ children, such as abandoned children, children from crisis families and children from red-light districts. The school, which has rehabilitated 75 children since it’s founding, aims to provide more than just shelter for children: it provides a home. Says Vinayak of Parivaar, "It is not an organisation we run, but a family. No child in Parivaar is seen as a beneficiary but as our own child."
