I look forward to reading Guruji’s column published every alternate Sunday in The Sunday Express. This week Guruji dwells upon the intuition and the capacity of mind to heal; he ends the column putting the entire lifespan in perspective:
That mind also has capacity to heal and to
elevate itself. It is full of joy, ease and love. Your entire past is a
dream. Just remember all the activities you did in the morning after
waking up. Isn’t it all like a dream? It wasn’t more than a dream,
because it was a memory and impression. Dream is also an impression.
See your whole past as a dream. In future, in the next 10-20 years, you
will be doing many things, they will all pass like a dream. Knowing
this and being aware of it, the space within us starts to open up and
we start experiencing heightened awareness. You start seeing another
dimension of life. Just wake up!
I also look forward to the Sunday express every alternate Sunday because of another great column written by Ratna Rajaiah. Her column this fortnight is on DrumStick tree scientifically known as Moringa Oleifera. Ratna introduces the properties of the tree by writing:
Scientifically speaking, Moringa sounds
like magic. Ounce for ounce, it has the calcium of four glasses of
milk, the Vitamin C of seven oranges and the potassium of seven
bananas. Memo to Popeye: Moringa has triple the iron of spinach and
more impressive attributes than olive oil."
But the most amazing property of the tree is the ability to act as a water purifier. Given the fact that Drumstick trees are pretty common – at least in South India ; we had one in our Garden when I was a kid – it is a wonder as to why we are not utilizing this knowledge for our benefit.
“Filthy water cannot be washed.” — An African saying
Can you believe that the mammoth problem of providing clean, safe,
drinking water to millions of Indians could lie in a handful of
drumstick seeds? Water is one of India’s most pressing problems — 80
percent of infectious diseases are water borne and 1.5 million
pre-school children in India die every year from diarrhoea. Now,
researchers at the University of Leicester in England say that
drumstick seeds can help to provide safe, cheaply produced drinking
water. Again, ironically, this apparently astounding discovery is a
native wisdom that women in Sudan and Indonesia have been using for
centuries! Except that we now know how this works. When dried, crushed
and powdered drumstick seeds are added to water, the powder binds
itself to dirt particles and bacteria. Soon, the coagulated particles
sink to the bottom, leaving clear, clean water. Just two teaspoons of
crushed seeds will clear 90 – 99.9 percent of the bacteria and all the
muck in a bucket of water and one tree will provide enough clean water
for a family of 5-6 for an entire year. You do the math on how much
that would cost an average Indian household.
