I recently read this fascinating book “A Whole New Mind: Why Right Brainers will rule the future” by Daniel E. Pink. This is indeed a riveting book that I completed within 2 days flat and attached is a mind map of the book that I created for my use. Daniel writes that all along Left brain thinking – logical, analytical, reasoning etc – was valued and more so because the nature of the economy demanded more left brain thinkers than right brainers. The right brain is all about emotions, making connections, seeing patterns, creativity, synthesis – Attributes that the new economy jobs will mandate for job seekers.
Daniel starts off by contrasting the Right Brain and the Left brain activities and moves on to 3A’s – Abundance, Asia and Automation. He sets the context by talking about how the knowledge workers and consequently a society that rewared all kind of Analytical thinking grew, but he says that all these L-Directed thinking isn’t enough, we are moving into an era of R-directed thinking and the causes he traces to the 3As’ and then tells us that we ought to become proficient in R-Directed thinking and master 6 aptitudes that are high concept and high touch: Design, Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play and Meaning.
It is here when Dan dives into these 6 elements that I found the book very interesting. I have marked several passages that I ought to remember and elements that I can use in my current role and as well as in future. If you have not yet read this book, do get yourself a copy.
